This isn't just a pastry. It's a cultural icon.
But not all natas are created equal.
We did the hard work to find the best of the best. You're welcome.
The Nata Power Rankings
1. Pastéis de Belém
The Vibe: The OG. The original. You have to go. There will be a line, but it moves fast. The recipe is a secret, and they taste different from any other. Worth the pilgrimage to Belém.
2. Manteigaria
The Vibe: The local favorite and main contender. You can watch them being made right in front of you. They're buttery, creamy, and consistently amazing. Multiple locations, so they're easy to find.
3. Castro
The Vibe: A newer, more modern spot but with a seriously good pastel de nata. The pastry is extra flaky and the custard is top-tier. A great option if the Manteigaria line is too long.
4. Fábrica da Nata
The Vibe: A solid, reliable choice with several locations. They have a nice seating area, making it a good spot to sit and chat rather than just grab-and-go. Good coffee, too.
5. Aloma
The Vibe: A multi-award-winning pastel de nata. They have a few locations, including at the airport. It's a classic, well-balanced nata that never disappoints. A true local's choice.
Find a Nata spot that's fair for all.
Pastéis de Belém is a must-try, but it's way out west. Is that fair for your friend coming from Alfama?
